Plymouth Mixed Summer League – Success or Failure?

The PMSL is now over and is slowly slipping into the annals of history. Thanks Tina for all your efforts, but what about the experiment of DCHUA appointing umpires for the first time.

Yes there was 1 Red (persistent dissent - see Blog on 'Umpire Abuse') and 21 Yellow cards out of over 110 games. But 5 Level One Candidates qualified so congratulations to them. Also a massive amount of umpire mentoring went on with existing Level One ‘Club’ Umpires and other Level One Candidate umpires.

So was it a success or a failure? I want to hear from you. If you played for a team or umpired or just have an opinion then Blog your feelings and let me know what you REALLY think.

Personally I think £40/£50 was a bargain for not having to sort out my own umpires every week. This is one less headache that I am now without and so I would hope to see the same next summer.

Great idea but not without issues. Speaking from both sides of the whistle (as I am wont to do on occasion)I think the benefits of regular independent umpires and new blood to the umpire ranks do outweigh the negatives of missed decisions and the frustration this causes to many players. There are, however, 2 important concerns.
1, It has to be remembered that, no matter which division, all games are competitive and the burden placed on some , very inexperienced, umpires is great. Even when the players are trying to help they have their limits (I feel I speak from an elevated position here and would like to take this opportunity to apologise to anyone I may have offended).
2, I know it is experience that helps here but there needs to be a major step toward improving the consistency of umpires both as an individual throughout a game and as part of a team. Having played a number of games throughout the summer I have seen a noticable increase in knowledge of the rules by new umpiresbut not so much understanding of when and how to apply them so that everybody gets a fair crack of the whip as the game progresses.
Non of this is intended to be in any way a negative reflection of the experiment. I hope to see more of the same next year although I promise not to try to play any more. Rather I would hope to create discussion on any ideas to plug the gaps I have highlighted.
Thanx for listening to an old man going on & on & on etc.
