A funny thing happened to me at the hockey game I recently umpired . . . .

I’m off up to Exeter today to umpire West Vintage v England Vintage, one of four games to celebrate ‘ISCA 30 Year On’, where some ‘experienced’ players have been playing for ISCA for 30 years. Goodness knows how many cards they have amalgamated between them, no more than 7 or 8 I suspect!

However, one of those ‘experienced’ players is Alan Coulter, who has recently been putting his considerable ‘experience’ to profitable use by umpiring the odd game for the Neutral Pool. I umpired with Alan when ISCA Vintage played Maidenhead Vintage in the last 16 of the EH Vintage Cup in January this year on the sand based at Exeter University. 2 Irishmen in control of 22 Englishmen – oh how we enjoyed that, but I digress.

Unfortunately, during the game the Maidenhead keeper, in the process of saving a shot, ended up breaking his ankle. The game was stopped and medical assistance was required; after a few minutes he started to go into shock. Now you’d think an ambulance would be sufficient. But no, as the picture shows we went the whole hog with the Devon Air Ambulance.

Of course, while Alan and I where concerned for the welfare of the elderly (er, sorry ‘experienced’ goalie) we felt it would be unwise to let such a photo opportunity slip by.

So that’s my ‘funny’ story. What’s yours?
